The Rallye Aïcha des Gazelles is a tough competition! It is an off-road race for women that includes navigating through 1,500 miles to various check points with only compasses and maps! The team that is able to make it to all the check points while adding on the least among of miles by having the best route, wins.
“No matter what you’ve done before, the Rallye Aïcha des Gazelles changes you,” explained off-road racer Nicole Pitell, “You’re out there in the Sahara for nine days. You can go hours at a time without seeing another car. The heat crushes you and you’re focusing so hard on keeping your heading that your eyes start to play tricks on you. Just getting to the end is an incredible achievement.
The Rallye Aïcha des Gazelles is scheduled to take place March 18th through April 2nd. It is expected to bring over 330 women to compete. As of now, 9 of the teams are expected to be from the USA. Although the teams are not allowed to use electronics during the competition, the vehicles have been tagged with onboard satellites so that you can track and watch their progress online!
