Females have never fully been accepted into racing, even to this day. For years females were expected to stay on the side lines and just watch, but now women are making their breakthrough. Jessica Mace had a crew chief at her first job tell her to change professions due to her gender. She took what that crew chief said to her and turned it into determination to prove him wrong, and she did. Jessica is now the only female that will be going over the wall and being a part of a pit crew in this year’s Indy 500 race. When Kate Gundlach goes out on the track, she notices all eyes are focused on her, same with Anna Chatten.
Awhile ago while Chatten was carrying some heavy things a fan turned around and told her that she should find a man to do her job instead. Frustrated, Chatten decided to be the bigger person and just shake her head without responding. Indy 500 fans make more comments to the females then the people who work alongside them do. Plus, Indy 500 fans have now heard that Simona de Silvestro, Pippa Mann, and Sarah Fisher will be racing in this year’s Indy 500 race to make a racing breakthrough for females. Mace, Chatten, and Gundlach have teamed up with Cara Adams to be the behind the scenes females at the next Indy 500 race. Only half- dozen females will be helping out. This year females hope to make a racing breakthrough and prove that they can partake in racing the same way males do.
