Over the years, cars have been made by many different things but you would never guess what these teen girls are making their cars out of. Refrigerators. To support STEM lessons (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) ComEd is sponsoring the Ice Box Derby. There will be 3 different race teams made up by multiple teenage girls. Each lap a new girl will drive and the rest of the team will complete a STEM challenge. In order to be eligible to race the team had to complete a series of challenges, 6 challenges in total.
Challenge one consists of building the frame, transmission and getting the tires. The team gets 5 hours to complete this task. The second challenge is placing and connecting the electric motor from the freezer. As a bonus the team receives speed boost. Challenge 3 is to assemble the steering column, acceleration system and brakes. The bonus for this round is a set of racing gloves for each girl. Challenge 4 is all about aerodynamics with a bonus racing spoiler and a time limit of just 3 hours.  Before a test drive the girls must complete challenge 5 which is to apply some decals, accessories and extra electrical. As a bonus the girls will receive custom decals. The final challenge is to test drive the cars and get their race day pole positions. Extra time trials are this challenge’s bonus.
